The Problem

You want to rent a car to explore Cappadocia or drive along the Aegean coast. However, you are holding a driver's license from your home country and are unsure if the Turkish police or car rental agencies will accept it, or if you will be heavily fined at the first checkpoint.

02

How the Law Works in Turkey

According to Turkish Highway Traffic Regulations, foreign nationals and tourists are legally allowed to drive in Turkey using their valid home-country driver's license for up to 6 months from their date of entry. You do not strictly need an International Driving Permit (IDP) unless your license does not have a photograph or is printed in a non-Roman alphabet (like Arabic, Cyrillic, or Mandarin).

03

What the Tourist Should Do

When driving, always carry three essential documents: your valid driver's license from your home country, your original passport (to prove your entry date is within the last 6 months), and the vehicle's registration/rental agreement. Hand these over calmly if stopped at a routine police or gendarmerie checkpoint.

04

The Risks

If you drive after being in Turkey for more than 6 months without converting your license, or if you drive a vehicle class you are not licensed for, you will be treated as driving without a license. This results in massive administrative fines, the vehicle being immediately towed and impounded, and the total voiding of any insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

LetFix Solution

If your rental car is unjustly impounded, or if a misunderstanding regarding your foreign license leads to a severe traffic penalty that threatens your legal status or budget, you need legal professionals to appeal the fine.
