The Problem
You booked a beautiful short-term rental on Airbnb. However, upon arrival, the host asks you for extra cash outside the app, or neighbors seem hostile and threaten to call the police. You might even find out the apartment is an illegal rental, making you worry about being evicted.
How the Law Works in Turkey
Turkey has recently introduced very strict laws regarding short-term rentals. It is now illegal to rent out residential apartments to tourists without a specific "Tourism Residence Permit" from the government. Furthermore, the host is legally obligated to register the passport details of all guests into the police Identity Notification System (KBS). Renting an unpermitted property is a massive legal liability for the host.
What the Tourist Should Do
Always book through official platforms; never agree to pay in cash or wire money outside the app. Before booking, ask the host if their property is officially registered. When you arrive, it is normal for the host to ask for your passport to register you with the police—this is the law. However, if the police arrive at the door because of complaints, show your booking confirmation to prove you are a bona fide tourist and not an illegal tenant.
The Risks
If the apartment you are staying in is raided by authorities for being an unregistered, illegal rental, the host will be heavily fined, and the apartment could be sealed on the spot. This means you could be evicted immediately, with nowhere to sleep and your vacation ruined.
