The Problem

You are packing for your trip and want to bring expensive gifts, a drone for photography, or your personal medication. At the Turkish border, you are stopped and told that these items are prohibited or require a special permit you don't have.

02

How the Law Works in Turkey

Turkish customs laws are very specific. For example, drones are often confiscated if they weigh over 500g and are not registered with the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority (SHGM). Bringing more than one smartphone for personal use can trigger heavy taxes. Certain medications (especially those containing codeine or high-strength painkillers) require a translated doctor’s prescription to be legally admitted.

03

What the Tourist Should Do

Check the official Turkish Customs website before you fly. If you are bringing a drone, register it online beforehand. Always keep your medications in their original packaging and have a digital copy of your prescription. If you are carrying gifts worth more than €430, you must declare them at the "Red Channel" to pay the necessary tax.

04

The Risks

The risk is immediate confiscation (El Koyma). If customs officers believe you are bringing items for sale rather than personal use, they can charge you with "Commercial Smuggling," which leads to massive fines and your name being flagged in the border control system for every future visit.
