The Problem

You have just landed in Istanbul or are trying to leave the country. At passport control, the border police look at their screen, hold onto your passport, and escort you to a separate holding room. You are missing your flight, and nobody is explaining what is happening in English.

02

How the Law Works in Turkey

Border police have broad authority to deny entry or detain individuals at airports. Common legal reasons include a severe visa overstay, unpaid fines, suspicion of forged travel documents, a pre-existing entry ban (Tahdit Kodu), or an active international arrest warrant (Interpol).

03

What the Tourist Should Do

Do not panic or cause a scene in the holding area. Ask the officers politely to explain the reason for your detention. Demand to contact your country's embassy or consulate. Most importantly, ask to contact a lawyer. You are allowed to communicate with legal representation even from the airport detention rooms.

04

The Risks

If you are denied entry, the immediate risk is being held in the airport's transit zone or a Repatriation Center (Geri Gönderme Merkezi) until the next available flight back to your origin country—at your own expense. If there is a criminal warrant, you could be transferred directly to a courthouse and then to prison. Ignoring the situation means you accept immediate deportation.

05

LetFix Solution

Airport detentions require lightning-fast legal intervention. An immigration or criminal defense lawyer can contact the border authorities on your behalf, find out the exact entry ban code or charge, and file an emergency appeal to stop a deportation.
