The Problem

Marrying a Turkish citizen does not automatically grant you citizenship. The process requires a minimum of three years of marriage and approval of a thorough investigation by Turkish authorities. Many applications are rejected for failing to meet genuine cohabitation requirements or documentary deficiencies.

02

How the Law Works in Turkey

Citizenship by marriage is regulated by Article 16 of the Turkish Citizenship Law (Law No. 5901). Requirements: at least three years of marriage to a Turkish citizen, maintaining effective family cohabitation, not engaging in activities incompatible with national security, and not suffering from diseases posing a risk to public health. Applications are submitted to the Provincial Directorate of Civil Registration (Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık Müdürlüğü) or Turkish consulates abroad.

03

What the Tourist Should Do

Register your marriage with Turkish authorities if you married abroad (apostille and sworn translation of the marriage certificate required). Wait at least three years from the marriage date before applying. Gather evidence of genuine cohabitation: shared address, joint bank accounts, family photographs. Submit the application with all required documents and prepare for a home interview.

04

The Risks

Marriages of convenience are actively investigated and can result in application denial and criminal prosecution. Divorce during the application process automatically cancels the procedure. Obtaining Turkish citizenship may affect your original citizenship depending on your home country laws.
