The Problem

After years of living legally in Turkey, you may be eligible for a long-term residence permit that offers nearly the same rights as citizenship. However, the eight-year continuous residence requirement is strictly interpreted, and interruptions in your permit history, time spent abroad, or gaps between permits can reset the clock. Many long-term residents discover they do not qualify despite years of presence.

How the Law Works in Turkey

The long-term residence permit is governed by Article 42 of Law No. 6458. Requirements: eight uninterrupted years of legal residence in Turkey (absences totaling more than 12 months in total or 6 continuous months disqualify), no social assistance received in the last three years, sufficient income or assets, valid health insurance, and no threat to public order or security. Benefits include: indefinite residence, exemption from work permits for most employment, access to public services, and protection from deportation except for serious criminal convictions or national security threats.

What the Tourist Should Do

Calculate your continuous legal residence period carefully, accounting for all absences from Turkey. Gather eight years of residence permit history documentation. Prepare proof of financial means, health insurance, and clean criminal record. Apply through the e-ikamet system and attend the appointment at İl Göç İdaresi with all original documents.

04

The Risks

The eight-year calculation is strict — even short permit gaps or overstays can disqualify you. Receiving social assistance (sosyal yardım) in the last three years is a disqualifying factor. The long-term permit can still be revoked if you are absent from Turkey for more than one continuous year. Criminal convictions, even minor ones, may be grounds for denial.
